Online Course: Managing Critical Incidents in Schools

AI Schools, in partnership with the Independent Schools Association, is proud to present a vital professional development session, “Managing Critical Incidents in Schools,” designed to equip school leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively handle crises. This online course will be delivered via Zoom on Friday 8th November 2024, from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

About the Session

Critical incidents are unpredictable and can arise in any school environment. Whether it’s a serious accident, natural disaster or a security threat, being prepared is key. This course is aimed at members of a school’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) or individuals with designated responsibility for developing a critical incident policy.

Participants will gain a deep understanding of how crises unfold and how to respond effectively in the most challenging moments. The course breaks down critical incidents into four key phases, offering a structured approach to crisis management that can be easily implemented in any educational setting.

Key Takeaways:

Critical Incident Pathway & Taking Control

The course will begin with an overview of the critical incident pathway, focusing on the role of a Critical Incident Management Team and avoiding common mistakes made in the early stages, known as the "Golden Hour."

Making the SLT Function as a Crisis Team

A well-coordinated response is crucial in any crisis. Participants will learn how to form and manage a Critical Incident Management Team, understanding the differences between the role of this team and a regular SLT. Practical steps for coordinated activity and common challenges will also be discussed.

Interactive Scenario

An evolving scenario will guide participants through each of the four phases of a critical incident pathway. This interactive segment will provide an opportunity for attendees to critically assess their current approach and identify areas for improvement.

Capturing Key Elements in a Workable Plan

The final segment will focus on distilling the key activities of crisis management into a concise, practical plan of less than 20 pages. Participants will leave the session with a clearer vision of how to create a streamlined, effective critical incident policy.

About the Presenter

The session will be delivered by Robin Hamilton, Founder of AI Schools, who brings years of experience in the field of educational leadership and crisis management. His expertise will help attendees navigate the complexities of critical incidents with confidence.
